Overview

Golden Bowl, nestled in the heart of Collie at 78 Forrest Street, offers an authentic Chinese dining experience that stands out in this small Western Australian town. This restaurant excels by blending traditional Chinese flavors with a welcoming, homey atmosphere managed by a friendly Chinese couple who clearly take pride in their craft.

The menu highlights dishes such as Beef Hokkien Noodles, which delight with their tender slices of beef and perfectly cooked noodles, and the fiery Szechuan Lamb that delivers a punch of bold, spicy flavors true to the region’s culinary roots. Noteworthy as well are the Squid and the Hot and Sour Soup — both staples that showcase balance and depth in taste. For those who enjoy classic Chinese fare, the Sweet & Sour Duck and Sizzling Lamb stand as excellent choices, each dish layered with textures and vibrant sauces that linger pleasantly on the palate.

Golden Bowl’s selection of entrees—from Fried Dumplings to Sesame Prawn Toast—brings variety and texture, offering a satisfying start to any meal. The combination plates, whether it’s the Black Pepper or Mongolian style, provide a wholesome, satisfying option for those seeking multiple flavors in one sitting. Vegans are thoughtfully accommodated here, with staff willing to tailor dishes to plant-based preferences, adding to its appeal for diverse diners.

The space itself leans towards intimate and cozy, which has its pros and cons. While the waiting area can feel cramped during peak times, customers understand this as a mark of the restaurant’s popularity and the quality of the food served. The relaxed pace in meal delivery reflects the laid-back charm of Collie—a small town where time slows down, allowing diners to savor their food and the company around them.

Golden Bowl’s target audience ranges from locals yearning for traditional Chinese flavors to travelers seeking a genuine, welcoming culinary stopover. It’s especially appreciated by those who value authentic taste and personal connection over the rush of typical commercial eateries. Though there are occasional waits, the consistent quality and flavor of the dishes make the experience worthwhile.

In summary, Golden Bowl brings a rich, authentic taste of Chinese cuisine to Collie. Its carefully prepared dishes, warm service, and approachable ambiance provide both comfort and culinary delight. Cramped waiting area however it was a testament to the quality of the food! The food was absolutely delicious, could not fault it. The prices were dearer than displayed on the menu, very naughty! The lady was very pleasant despite being very busy. The best Chinese food in Collie by far.

A hidden gem in Collie. The Mapo Tofu was quite tasty, and the stir-fried beef with shallots and the pineapple chicken were great too - the meat was really tender. The place is run by a Chinese couple. We had a chat with the lady and found her very friendly. We only wish we had a few more days in Collie to hear more of her stories and try more dishes. Food took a bit longer to come out, but it was totally understandable. The slower pace of the food is probably just part of the laid-back small-town kind of charm.

As a Chinese person who grew up eating like this, I found the food delicious, especially the crispy honey pepper chicken. I'm walking the Bibbulmun from the south and I've missed such food as I passed through track towns. Glad that it's here. It was completely empty at lunch and dinner on Sunday though.
